Second away win of the season takes Mathare United to fifth place on the league standings

A first goal in Mathare United colours by Dennis Okoth was enough to hand the Slumboys maximum points against Shabana FC on Sunday.

The win, our second of the season, moved us up to fifth in the Premier League table after five rounds of play, and after the game, Coach John Kamau was left delighted with his charges, who executed his game plan to perfection.

He said, “Of course I am happy. To play Shabana on the road is never easy, and we had to fight for our result. What I am more pleased with is that the boys executed what we had planned expertly. Our goal came from Shabana’s blind side, and this is something we had worked on with the strikers before this game.”

The win in Kisii saw us extend our unbeaten run against Shabana to three matches; more importantly, it was our third clean sheet of the campaign, and Kamau was full of praise for goalkeeper Kevin Ouru, who had a stellar performance in goal.

He said, “The boys showed character as they had to suffer to get the win. We expected Shabana to come at us with everything they got, and the lads, especially the keeper, did a marvellous job. I don’t even know what to say (about Ouru’s performance) because today, on several occasions, he has bailed us out.”

Attention now switches to Thursday’s fixture with Gor Mahia, who have won three in a row and sit two points above Mathare in third place.
