Okoth opens his Mathare United account against his former club Shabana

Dennis Okoth was the hero of the day after his first-half strike secured a 1-0 victory for Mathare United against Shabana FC on Sunday.

Facing off against his immediate former employers, Okoth marked his first start in United colours with a magnificent strike with his weaker left foot in the 38th minute.

The forward looked like he was about to whip in a cross into the area from the left side after being found in space by John Nyawir, but instead went for goal, catching the Shabana keeper and everyone else at the Gusii Stadium off guard.

With the three points, John Kamau’s men, who haven’t lost any of their last three meetings with the Glamour Boys, moved up to fifth in the standings, tied with two other teams on seven points.

The hard-fought win was crowned by Kevin Ouru’s stellar performance in goal. The young keeper kept his third clean sheet of the season and played a big part, especially in the latter stages of the game, with outstanding saves in quick succession.

There will, however, be little time to savour the victory as the lads are back in action this week, Thursday 4pm against Gor Mahia at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
