Mathare United recorded a 2-1 loss in the opening match of the 2025/2026 season against Posta Rangers at Kasarani Annex Stadium on Monday.

Captain Elli Asieche had given us the lead in the 43rd minute from the spot before Faustine Ojiambo drew Posta Rangers level in the 73rd minute. Second half substitute Trevor Omondi handed the visitors maximum points in the 85th minute with a composed finish inside the box.

Though John Kamau’s men bossed the play in the opening stanza, clear-cut chances came few and far between. Paul Kinyanjui, a menace to the visitors’ defence, had several chances to break the deadlock early, but was denied by some superb goalkeeping from former Mathare United keeper Fredrick Odhiambo.

Odhiambo would not hold out for long, though, as he was beaten two minutes before halftime. Asieche, playing as the central striker, showed cool nerves to dispatch a penalty awarded after a handball in the area.

With the lead, the lads sought to protect their advantage and retreated more and more as the second half wore on. In the 73rd minute, however, the Mailmen would begin to make their relentless pressure pay off with Ojiambo finishing from close range after his initial effort from a header had cannoned off the woodwork.

And 10 minutes later, they would complete the comeback through Omondi’s cool finish with his weaker left foot from the edge of the area.

Coach Kamau gave debuts from the start to goalkeeper Kevin Ouru and left back Herit Mungai, while Dennis Okoth was introduced in the 76th minute.

The team will seek to make an immediate response with their next match coming away to KCB FC on Friday, 26 September.
