Late Asango header hands Mathare maximum points in Kericho

A Cetric Asango header with less than 10 minutes to play was the difference at the Kericho Green Stadium as Mathare United wrapped up the 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a crucial 1-0 win over Bandari FC.

Needing to win their final match of the season to be assured of another campaign in the topfllight, the Slumboys delivered an inspiring performance on a rainy afternoon in Kericho.

Mathare would have still secured survival with a point as they arrived for the day sitting three points above the drop zone.

However, with news trickling in of Kariobangi Sharks’ emphatic final day victory that would have made things sticky in the event of a loss on Sunday, the lads dug their heels in and were rightly rewarded for their efforts in the 81st minute when Asango rose highest inside the area to connect with a sumptuous delivery from Hillary Kiprotich, the Kericho-born defender, who was the main highlight for the sizeable crowd at the Green Stadium.

With the win, Mathare finish the season on 41 points and with 11 wins, the club’s best haul on the win column in the Premier League since finishing sixth in the 2018/19 season.
