Mathare United FC

The lads took a big step in the right direction in their quest to secure survival in the Premier League on Saturday by defeating Mara Sugar 1-0 in Awendo.

Mathare arrived on matchday 32 sitting just three points above the drop zone and desperate for a win after a run of three games without victory. That run had brought about a coaching change with John Kamau, who was dismissed following last weekend’s loss at home to APS Bomet, being replaced by his assistant, Mohamed Muchula, on an interim basis.

At the Green Stadium in Awendo, Muchula made four changes to the team that had started against Bomet, but it was two of the players who had remained in the squad who combined for the winner.

Brian Ouru celebrating Mathare United’s winner against Mara Sugar

A quick throw-in by Isaac Omweri on 14 minutes was well controlled by Brian Ouru, whose, in turn, quick delivery into the area caught the host’s defence line lacking, resulting in an own goal by Drona Olanga.

It was a crucial victory that showcased the Slumboys’ resilience and fighting spirit at a ground that has been a tough hunting ground for the team.

United have now equalled last season’s tally of 10 wins and, with 38 points, have pulled to six points clear of the relegation zone heading into the final two rounds of the campaign.

Up next for the lads is another crucial fixture against Ulinzi Stars, who, with a game in hand, find themselves also looking to secure survival.
