As the Premier League season continues to wind down, Mathare United maintains its quest for a top-half finish and will on Saturday seek to strengthen their chances when they welcome Nairobi United at the Kasarani Stadium Annexe.

This fixture will represent the first time that Isaac Omweri will be on the opposing side against the NaiBois, the team he left when he joined us halfway through this season.

The winger had known only one team before he joined us and had only played for Nairobi in his professional career, creating lasting memories, one of which was helping the club qualify for the Premier League last season.

In his preview for Saturday’s game, though, Omweri downplayed the significance of the match and termed it “just another game”.

“It is the nature of our sport,” Omweri said, “One day you are in one team and the next in another. What you have to do is not look too much into the past and forget to move forward. I am a Mathare player now, and that is what matters. Saturday, my teammates and I will be out to win.

“Facing my former team is a unique situation, but to tell the truth, it is just another game in our schedule. A game we have to win to continue with our climb up the table.”

Omweri has been a revelation since joining the club and has so far been involved in five goals, netting twice. He has attributed his superb start to life as a Slumboy to the warm welcome he has received, as well as the style of play in John Kamau’s team.

“I thank God that I have been able to settle quickly at the club. My performances may suggest that it might have been easy, but it is very far from that. Our playing style suits me perfectly. We are a team that wants to keep the ball, and this plays to my strengths. The coach also wants us to always play simple football, and that is something that allows everyone to get involved,” he said.

Mathare are coming off a superb display against Bidco United, where they won 3-0 with Omweri assisting the first goal by John Makwata. Now the lads will be looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season with victory in this fixture dubbed “the Nairobi Derby”. And having won the reverse match 1-0, there is plenty of motivation going into tomorrow.
