Mathare United seek to bounce back against AFC Leopards

Mathare United will take on AFC Leopards on Sunday in the Premier League, and vice captain Mohammed Kilume has called on his teammates to be self-assured as they seek to return to winning ways with the 3pm kickoff at the Nyayo Stadium.

John Kamau’s men have had a slow start to the season and last Thursday suffered their third loss in six outings.

Kilume, who captained the team at Kasarani against Gor Mahia last time out, previewed the match against Leopards and said, “We have to carry ourselves forward with confidence. We are coming off a loss, but we mustn’t let that dampen our spirits. We have already shown we can win, so we just have to be consistent at it.”

United have won twice so far and have seven points. In the games in which the team has avoided defeat, opponents have found a compact defence and have failed to score.

Thursday’s game against Gor had a sizable crowd in the stands despite it being a midweek game, and Kilume expects an even brighter atmosphere on Sunday.

“A midweek game is not like a game played on the weekend. So the crowd and noise on Sunday will be much bigger and louder. This frightens the nerves a little bit, so all I urge my teammates is to have composure and just settle into the game. It will not be an easy match, but we as players can make it easy with a steadfast attitude.”

Last season, Leopards won both home and away in this fixture.
