Mathare United continues with its Premier League campaign this weekend and will play Sofapaka on Saturday at the Kasarani Stadium Annexe.

John Kamau’s men are looking to return to winning ways, and a match against the league’s bottom-placed team offers the opportunity to do so.

It will, however, not be an easy fixture according to Mohammed Kilume, as with imminent relegation, the Batoto Ba Mungu have nothing to lose and should offer a stern test.

“People might think that, as Sofapaka are rooted at the bottom of the table, they will be easy prey for us,” Kilume, who made his Premier League debut as a Sofapaka player back in 2017, said, “But this is very skewed thinking. Yes, they are in a difficult position, and with nothing to lose, so to speak, we expect a very difficult game.

“I empathise with them as it is a club that nurtured me. I want them to remain in the league, but it is not in their hands.”

Relegation for Saturday’s opponents will be confirmed if they fail to win in the day’s 3 pm kickoff. Sofapaka are 12 points from safety with five games left to conclude the season.

Kilume also touched on his team’s predicaments as United still haven’t confirmed their place in next season’s Premier League campaign.

“Inconsistency has been our portion this season, and this has really dented the targets we had set for ourselves. But we can still have a decent campaign if we finish strongly,” he said.

The Slumboys, who won 1-0 in the reverse fixture against Sofapaka, have racked up 34 points and sit five points above the drop zone.
