Following an exciting win last time out, Mathare United takes on Kariobangi Sharks in the Slum Derby on Saturday, seeking to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season.

John Kamau’s men have claimed seven wins and, with 25 points, are 11th in the standings.

John Mark Makwata has previewed the match against his former team and is looking to make an impact just like he did on his MUFC debut against Ulinzi Stars, another of his former teams.

“The morale is high after we had a positive result last weekend. Training has been tough, and everyone is dedicated. We hope that we continue with this positive spirit for even longer than just this weekend.

“I expect a good game, enjoyable if you can say so, because both teams have similar styles of play. I was fortunate enough to score on my debut and want to do so yet again this weekend. Scoring against my former teams is something that often happens. I scored against Sharks last season while at Bandari. All in all, it is not about me but the team and any player who gets to play, I will be behind them fully.”

Makwata started the win over Tusker but was withdrawn as we trailed 1-0 in the second period. In his place came young forward Dennis Okoth, and his introduction proved a masterstroke as he scored twice, powering us to a 3-1 victory, our biggest win of the season.

Makwata, a former KPL Golden Boot winner, sees plenty of potential in Okoth and is playing the role of mentor.

“I was happy with the impact he made against Tusker. He is a young player and is still learning. I am here not to compete with him but to help him with his journey. We talk a lot, and he is very attentive and wants to grow.”

Sharks won the reverse game at the Kasarani Stadium, Annexe 2-1.
