Gabriel Njoroge returns to Mathare United as assistant coach

Mathare United is pleased to confirm that a club legend has returned in a coaching role.
Gabriel “Kingi” Njoroge will be part of John Kamau’s technical bench as an assistant coach and has already been involved in Tuesday’s training session.
On returning to his boyhood club, the 54-year-old said, “I feel reborn. That is the only way I can describe the feeling of returning to where everything began for me. I am here to help the team and the coach in achieving our full potential, and I know we will succeed.”
The veteran tactician has a storied history with the club.
Kingi, during his playing days, was among the first players who helped form Mathare United back in 1994, after years of being active both as a player and coach in the MYSA football system.
After officially retiring from playing, Kingi took up a role as an assistant coach at the club and, under the late Jonathan Niva, guided Mathare to the 1998 Moi Golden Cup title, the club’s first-ever national trophy.
A year later, the UEFA B Licence holder took up head coach duties and led the team to clinching the 2000 President’s Cup title as well as the Hedex Millennium Cup.
Kingi held the position of head coach for much of the early 2000s and on three separate occasions, had the team finish as runners-up in the Premier League.
A former Gold Medal-winning coach at the global Norway Cup tournament, Kingi has also won the U20 Premier League title twice with our junior side.
Kingi’s most recent coaching role in the Premier League was with Murang’a Seal as head coach in late 2023.
