Mathare United FC

Mathare United is pleased to confirm the signing of John Mark Makwata for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The Kenyan international joins after spending a season with coastal-based outfit Bandari FC and is our third signing in the mid-season transfer window.

On joining the club, the former Premier League top scorer said, “I am happy to be here and I am relishing the new challenge. I have considered a lot of things and I can confidently say that Mathare is the best fit for me. It is a historic club and the coach is someone I have worked with before which makes settling easier. Those are some of the things that attracted me to the club.”

The forward has on numerous occasions ranked high in scoring charts in the country and also whenever he has continued his career abroad.

Having played for Ulinzi Stars, Police FC as well as for clubs in Zambia, Botswana and Kuwait, Makwata brings with him much needed experience and a big presence in our attack, something that John Kamau has felt his side has lacked this season.

Speaking on Makwata’s signing, Kamau, who coached him during his spell as an assistant with the Harambee Stars, said, “The only thing I can feel we have lacked this season is goals. We have matched every opponent we have faced, but in games where we have faltered, it is because we were unable to bury the chances we created. With Makwatta, we get a player who almost solves all of our issues in attack. We have recruited well, trying to address our bluntness, and with the three players we have brought on board, I am optimistic of our chances going forward.”

At Mathare, Makwata a St Luke’s Kimilili Boys Alumnus, links up with former teammates John Macharia and Kevin Ouru. He played alongside Macharia at Bandari and Ouru at Kariobangi Sharks.

Makwata also had goalkeeper coach David Okello and trainer Danson Kago as teammates at national level with the Harambee Stars.
