Second half goal hands Mara Sugar maximum points at Kasarani

Despite a competitive performance at Kasarani Stadium, Mathare United succumbed to a solitary goal to Mara Sugar in the Premier League on Monday, with the result denying us the chance to win back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
John Kamau’s men, who had the lion’s share of possession as well as attempted shots on target, came undone in the 51st minute when Dennis Cheruiyot scored a contentious-looking goal as he seemed to have handled the ball right before placing it past Kevin Ouru.
Our sixth loss in 12 games continued an inconsistent campaign thus far for the Slumboys, who drop to 10th after being leapfrogged by the Millers, who had arrived for the game sitting in the relegation zone.
Mathare started the 4pm kickoff as the better side and dominated the early exchanges.
Musa Masika would have opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute with a ferocious drive from outside the area that was fingertipped over the bar by the Mara keeper.
Paul Kinyanjui, our match winner against Nairobi United last week, also came close to scoring, and so too did Elli Asieche and John Nyawir in the opening half.
In the second period, the Millers, coached by Edward Manoah, broke the deadlock against the run of play when Cheruiyot stabbed the ball home from inside the area while attacking a freekick delivery from the left.
The goal would, however, not deter the lads as they kept piling more pressure in search of the equaliser that would, unfortunately, not come.
With another game at Kasarani against Bidco United coming up on Friday, the lads will have to quickly get over Monday’s disappointment and work towards a response.
